Rishi Sunak will drive a wrecking ball through commitments to tackle climate change with his plans to authorise more than 100 new North Sea licences to extract the UK’s oil and gas reserves.

The prime minister sought to justify his plans to ‘max out’ the nation’s carbon-based fuels, saying it would strengthen the UK’s energy security and reduce the cost of UK energy.
