Politics bigots LGBTQ+ wes streeting
A bigot called into LBC from the 1950s to say Wes Streeting shouldn’t be the Defence Secretary because he’s gay, if you were wondering why Pride is still needed
You don’t have to be a card-carrying member of the Wes Streeting Fan Club, or even to think he’s well suited to the position of Secretary of State for Defence, to recognise that this LBC listener has rocked up with attitudes that are so out of date they’ll probably be written into the next Restore Britain manifesto.
You are, of course, free to think Mr Streeting is the best thing since sliced bread, and God’s gift to the Ministry of Defence.
Either way, brace yourself for some pure, unvarnished homophobic bigotry.
"Give your head a wobble, mate."
@HenryRiley1 challenges caller John, who says Wes Streeting won’t be taken seriously as Defence Secretary because of his "camp" way of speaking. pic.twitter.com/yIA0DBzNyC— LBC (@LBC) August 9, 2026
“You’re seriously saying that, because of his sexuality, he’s not going to be taken seriously? Not by idiots like you.”
We’re not sure John should give his head a wobble, though. His brain may rattle straight out of one ear.
Wes Streeting had this reaction to John’s bigotry.
Water off a duck’s back.
My message to every single young person who worries about encountering this sort of thing in their lives and careers is simple: we are stronger, they are weaker, and the future is brighter. https://t.co/qDtC6HpOK1

I also want to share something with those struggling with abuse because of who you are or who you love.
It might feel hard now, but it gets better. You will build resilience and you will find – in time – strength from your experience.
Be proud. Be strong by being you.

That’s the best message to take away from this type of behaviour, but it didn’t stop people being incensed – nor should it.
Some of the reactions were understandably NSFW. These seven examples have it covered.

What an absolutely unashamed person.
I don't like Streeting for his policies and ideologies.
But never for his sexuality.
Well done, Henry, for putting him in his place. pic.twitter.com/QfxZSRYds6— Curious MiND (@kanch7) August 9, 2026

I am no longer shocked at people thinking like this. I have never seen as much homophobia as today. X is not helping. We can literally be called the f slur or a "carousel of c@nts" and no one gives a shit. https://t.co/pKOyOVlUof
