There was a good reason one Portugal player didn’t join Christiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick celebrations
Not sure if you spotted one player resolutely not joining in with his team mates when Christiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick against Spain in Portugal’s World Cup opener.
But even if you didn’t, this is one football rule we are unlikely to forget any time soon.

Glad it wasn’t just us.
Wow that's deep
i didn't even know that— Chief Reptilia. (@watin_dey) June 18, 2018
Here’s more of what people had to say online. The chap who stayed on the pitch is Jose Fonte, just in case you’re wondering.
For the benefit of doubt…
This images are from England vs Tunisia #Worldcup game.. This has been happening, but just that football fans never take note.. Players do this plenty of times but as football fans we never knew the 'why'. pic.twitter.com/GdIoetcYf2

There has been so much argument back and forth about this 'rule'..
Here's an image from another #WorldCup game… This are Australia players celebrating their goal against France outside of the pitch while a player remained in opposition half. pic.twitter.com/6RX36VKtE6

But why celebrate off the field of play in the first place! Just stay together as a team in the opponents half?

Like this, you mean?

Perfect like it should be 👌

Sometimes teams want to celebrate the goal more with the fans than the players

But …
You can’t kick off if someone is in your half of the pitch. If they were all off the pitch. There is no reason why the kick off can’t be taken if nobody is on the wrong half of the pitch
— Simon Gillen (@simongillen) June 18, 2018
And here’s the thing. If it’s not a rule why did that Portuguese player make such a thing motioning to his team mate to stay on the pitch?
Lol..
If not for the guy who reminded the last player to stay put…

Have another look…

Just imagine the scenes if they had all left the pitch and Spain had kicked off and scored …
Mark Clattenburg, we need you.
