Michael Gove tried to be friends with Jay Rayner and his comeback was brutal
Turns out Jay Rayner is almost as good at Twitter as he is at reviewing restaurants.
You might remember his brilliant takedown of Daily Mail columnist Sarah Vine after she responded to his tweet about her buddy, Toby Young.
I’ve known the rt hon @toadmeister since he was 19. I’ve also worked with him. The only constant has been his lack of self-awareness. Today, the son of Lord Young called out a determined eco-campaigner for being privileged. He has only become more himself with age. #twattery https://t.co/v1T9CJHscU

This is typical of @jayrayner1 he knew us all back in the day when he worked for the mail on Sunday. Yes, Tweeps, he worked on the Mail. His mother was a very talented and famous journalist.

The two of you have both made a terrible mistake here. You’ve have confused me knowing you, with holding either of you in any regard whatsoever. And Toby, if I’d done something so terrible that you coming to my aid might help, I’d deserve to be left for dead.

Well now Jay has done something similar to Vine’s husband, once and future Tory leader wannabe, Michael Gove.
It began when Rayner said this about Gove’s latest wheeze, a ‘national food strategy’ to help guarantee safe, healthy and affordable food.
Safe, healthy and affordable food is both a noble goal and a right. So a National Food Strategy is a v good idea. But worth pointing out: the greatest threat to safe, healthy and affordable food is the Brexit championed by @michaelgove who commissioned it. https://t.co/R6KQ0xFZN7

A bit of a sting in the tale there, which Gove chose (mostly) to ignore.
Thank you @jayrayner1 – we will of course disagree on much but your thinking and writing on food are indispensable to the debate we need to have https://t.co/aJ7OvY2w2S
— Michael Gove (@michaelgove) June 27, 2019
But he couldn’t ignore this one.
I don't simply disagree with your pursuit of this staggeringly damaging Brexit @michaelGove – promoting a bus plastered with lies, leading an organisation guilty of transgressing electoral law, running a campaign even you acknowledge was tainted by xenophobia. I'm appalled by it. https://t.co/KXtIsWnGur
— Jay Rayner (@jayrayner1) June 27, 2019
There was no coming back from that.
I can’t think of any politician who’s faux manners and praise come across as disingenuous and patronising as Michael Gove

I like how he implies that you just write « on food ». As if you were just a lifestyle writer, not a serious journalist.

Adds Govey to the list of people righteously flamed by Jay Rayner. Top work.
