Andrew Neil’s boast about getting a waiter fired for questioning the tip got exactly the reactions you’d expect – 19 brutal and occasionally NSFW verdicts
For many people, we suspect, wild horses couldn’t have dragged out of them the anecdote Daily Mail columnist and Talk Radio anchor Andrew Neil shared with colleagues Stig Abell and Kate McCann about an incident in a New York restaurant.
Lesson learned: never ask @afneil for a higher tip!

I was taking some people out to dinner. I was the host. I was picking up the bill.
He said quite loudly “Was there something wrong with the meal or the service, Mr Neil?” and I said “No, no, it was fine.” “Oh, ’cause it’s just – it’s a bit light.” he said.
He was unlucky, because I happened to know the owner of that restaurant, and I called the owner later that night, and he was fired in the morning.
Even in response to that curiously boastful telling, Neil had some instant cheerleaders.
Ex-waiter (5 years) here: the server in this story absolutely deserved a rocket for embarrassing a punter like this. And 15% is a massive mark up. https://t.co/1MKlm8zah3

Ever heard of something called customer service? No waiter should behave in that manner and he deserved to lose his job. @afneil

And he deserved to get fired. I decide who gets a tip anyone who asks gets told to fuck off.

But a large number of responses condemned him in no uncertain terms.
Why brag about being a massive dickhead? https://t.co/QBQkdBiBDI

Andrew Neil clearly felt he was being misrepresented, so he added a lot of detail to his story. It certainly put a different spin on it. It’s relatively long, but worth reading in full.
This true story has generated a lot of untrue responses from the usual know-nothing Twitter pontificators. So here’s the full story.
It’s 2013, I hosted a dinner for US contacts and journos in NYC in a rather fancy, expensive restaurant owned by a friend. It was a thank you. Not… https://t.co/liJ1WQbGq8— Andrew Neil (@afneil) April 27, 2026
The update brought additional support.
Whatever one thinks about the correct tip rate and how to pay waiters, one thing this illustrates is that the hospitality industry has forgotten its purpose.
If you are making your guests uncomfortable, or refusing to serve them due to their views, you aren’t being hospitable. https://t.co/GWOsNYJe3k— Stephen Laughton 🇺🇦 (@StevoLaughton) April 28, 2026
It doesn't matter how wealthy he is he's not to blame that the waiter hasn't made it yet, hes worked hard and earned well . Im a cleaner and that's my fault nobody else's and guess what ? I have manners unlike the jumped up waiter he deserves to lose his job

If a waiter feels they need to embaras a customer the tip should be zero.

However, if he expected a blanket apology and a pat on the back, it wasn’t exactly mission accomplished.
1.
Neil attempting damage limitation.
It wasn't the story that people are angry about, it's the haughty superiority in the clip explaining how someone was sacked after he made a complaint

The American tipping system is extremely problematic.
It is what it is, though, and getting a waiter fired over it is nauseating.
Could have been someone supporting a family. But at least Andrew Neil got to enjoy his power trip!

I too got the sack from a waitressing job after a customer complained. Different circs, I was 17 & was sexually harassed but it was still humiliating. Imagine being proud of this particular story https://t.co/DZEDOFCGtn

This is disgusting, and the fact that he thinks getting a waiter sacked is a flex is very telling.
He should have asked his friend who owns the restaurant to raise the wage. https://t.co/OlKKqbXmyP

Although I disagree entirely with the US tipping system that creates this tension between staff and customers….this says a lot about Andrew Neil, none of which is good.

Brits don't really understand American tipping. It took me years to figure it out. I did not however get anyone fired as I did so https://t.co/AvDylrU5uR

The minimum hourly rate in NY is $11.35, that's roughly £8.40ph.
Their tips are everything and 15% is seen as a low tip.
But a dickhead like Neil wouldn't know that and wanted to flex and get the waiter sacked.
It says it all about him
