Twitter 1970s nostalgia takedowns
A British nostalgia account got all misty-eyed over this 1970s ‘council estate’ and were fact checked ’til they farted
There’s no shortage of nostalgia accounts over on Twitter harping back to a time when Britain was apparently so much better than it is now, especially when there weren’t power cuts or inflation was running at 26.9%.
But it’s this one in particular that captured our attention today after it got all misty-eyed over 1970s ‘council estates’.
A British council estate from the 1970s.
A breeding ground for many of us, from a time when we knew our neighbours and there was a decent sense of community spirit. pic.twitter.com/aE8a58GM5Z— Yesterday’s Britain, A Better Britain. (@YesterdaysBrit1) May 11, 2026
And we’re glad they did – in a way – because the fact checking that followed was a most entertaining thing of wonder.

This isn’t a council estate; it’s where your mate with the ankle-deep carpet and an attractive mother who never seemed to do much lived. https://t.co/da9E6ESrwO

That’s not a council estate – that’s the posh area you go trick or treating and where one of your friends lived.
The real council estates we grew up in created us and wouldn’t trade that life I had for this area.
