Theresa May’s meeting with Angela Merkel got off to the most awkward start
Theresa May was in Berlin today to meet Angela Merkel to ask for something – anything – she can do to help out with the Brexit mess we find ourselves in.
The summit didn’t get off to entirely the best start, however, when the so-called prime minister stepped out of the car onto the red carpet and this happened.
Slightly awkward start to what the German press call Theresa May’s ‘begging tour’ Angela Merkel normally waits on red carpet to greet guests on arrival ….not today… pic.twitter.com/yYYG3NGy37

Hello? Is anyone there?
Merkel did eventually turn up, only for things to get even worse when May was forced back out onto the red carpet a second time.
Here’s exactly what people made of the whole thing on Twitter.
At least the door opened.

2016: 'Sunlit uplands, Global Britain!'
2019: 'At least the car door opened'

Oh yes, remember that?
Awwwwww. I mean, I know what a terrible human being she is, but it's hard not to pity poor old awkward old @theresa_may .

I was a nurse for 35 years, and over that time I learned how to have empathy with even the worst of humankind. Doctors, for instance.

She actually made May walk back outside

I thought for a minute there Merkel was escorting PM back to the car to wave her off.

It looks more like a slight timing issue rather than a snub given that Merkel was there immediately afterwards.

In politics, as with good comedy, timing is everything….

Really not one for any kind of racial stereotyping… But in my experience any German being late for something is a huge story.

Actually Merkel was not late. Meeting was at 12 and she arrived at 11.57

To conclude …
If Theresa May turned up on my doorstep with the same deal for the millionth time I think I'd pretend to be out as well. https://t.co/eBpcINECtb
