Anti-homeless spikes removed after cushion protest. Humanity prevails
“Anti-homeless spikes” – you read that right – “anti-homeless spikes” – have been removed from Manchester city centre after local people kept covering them up with cushions.
God knows who thought it was a good idea to put the spikes outside an office block where homeless people often slept.
Here’s what they looked like.

Very sad that in the year of 2017
Businesses have to use spikes to keep homeless people away!#homelessness#heartbreak pic.twitter.com/bO3ezkBWAQ— GARY TRAYNOR (@GaryTraynor1) January 31, 2017
But in a sign that the world has not gone entirely to shit, they have been taken up following a “common sense” conversation between the council and the building’s owners.
And here’s what happened after local people got involved.
We’ll cover your spikes with cushions
& pillows & throws & sheets
cos your spikes don’t fix the problem

Mum Jennie Platt and her two sons were among those leading the protest.
Spikes were put on a step to stop homeless people sleeping there. This family covered them with cushions. https://t.co/pDJ26mZWai pic.twitter.com/2WxbqIdLNr

It only takes a few good people to start turning the bad stuff around and inspire others https://t.co/kF8oqMupcb
