This brutal takedown of Imperial measures doesn’t give an inch
The official system of measures in the UK is the metric system, but a lot of people still hover between that and the old Imperial system, declaring themselves to be six foot, because it sounds better than 1.8 metres. However, in the US, they’re seriously committed to the Imperial system, forcing people to memorise a wide range of numbers: 12 inches = 1 foot, 2 pints = 1 quart, 8 ounces = 1 cup, because all American cups are the same size, presumably.
On a Reddit page called “Murdered by Words”, someone called mellomsn shared an exchange they’d seen on the topic of remembering the stats for a mile.
Ouch! There’s no real argument against that. This little exchange happened in the comments section.
And it’s true!
We should remember this next time a Brexiter makes a nostalgic appeal for a return to pounds and pints.
