This golden moment with Boyzone shows why Irish TV legend Gay Byrne will be missed
At the age of 85, Irish Late, Late Show host, Gay Byrne, has passed away, leaving a unique legacy both in Ireland and beyond. The veteran presenter had an easy manner that brought out the best in his guests, as well as his slightly wicked sense of humour, which saw more than a little gentle mockery over the years. In what is probably his most famous moment, here he is introducing a very young – and somewhat shambolic – Boyzone to the world.
His assessment of their talent doesn’t seem to have held them back at all. People have been paying tributes to him across all media, and here are a few examples from Twitter.

Watching The Late Late show with my fam + the Christmas toy show are some of my happiest childhood memories. I met him a few years ago + babbled of my love for him. He held my hands and just said “ I know, I know”. I was so star struck. R.I.P Gay Byrne #ThanksGaybo pic.twitter.com/9bpl8fdm7e

Gay Byrne was the finest broadcaster who ever lived.
He wore his unique ability and achievements lightly and with endless courteousness.
Today is a sad day.

Very sad to hear of the passing of Gay Byrne, the man is such an important figure in the landscape of modern Irish culture. Not only a lasting icon of Irish television but a lasting presence in people's hearts and minds also. Rest in Peace, and love to his family.

If Ireland in all it’s generosity, progress, creativity, joy , heartbreak and exuberance over the last sixty years had a voice , it would be the dulcet, challenging, bemused questioning reassuring voice of Gay Byrne. We as a country are all the better for his life. R.I.P. #gaybyrne

RTE’s Drivetime show had a call from Stephen Fry, who had this to say about the great man.
We offer our sincere condolences to his family.
