“I don’t believe in ghosts, but …” – 19 very creepy tales
The Christmas season has long been associated with ghost stories, and as it’s technically still the Christmas season, this question from journalist Robyn Wilder seemed apt.
Hey Twitter, what’s the “I don’t believe in ghosts, but…” story from your life?

The replies may not change any minds about ghosts, but they’re certainly creepy enough to be a bad thing to read at bedtime.
These were the creepiest of the bunch.

After my dad died, my wife and I were in the room at my sister’s house where his coffin lay. Having a sad little chat about how we missed him. And then the doorhandle of the room rattled for a few seconds, as if someone was trying to get in. When I opened it nobody else was near. https://t.co/44Sn9eK2mN

I was 7/8 we lived in 200yo cottage.
I had recurring dream, big man came into my room & went to sleep on a sofa at the end of my bed.
I didn't have a sofa at the end of my bed.
My friend slept over. In the morning she asked "why did the big man come in & sleep on the sofa?" https://t.co/Q9eOjOKTr8

Chopping peppers in pub kitchen, some scamp came up behind and pulled my chefs trousers sharply up. I spun around while they still gripped on to my waist…but the room was empty

He was clearly shaken by it and couldn't get his head around it. They checked the CCTV and saw him talking but there was nobody else there.

Another. When my daughter was born I lived in a 30s house*.
Baby monitor on, she was upstairs me downstairs, she started crying. I heard "shhh, shhh" clearly on the monitor and she stopped. Assumed husband had soothed her back to sleep. Then he came in from the garden. https://t.co/Q9eOjOKTr8— CP (@chickenprincess) January 1, 2020

I supposedly had an invisible friend called Lilibet when I was about 2. Parents heard me chatting to her on baby monitor and talking about 'Danny'. Years later I pointed to my great-grandmother in an album and said 'There's Lilibet'. Her first husband Daniel had died during WWI.

Used to work in a library. Went down to the basement alone to pick up some old books. Phone down there won’t stop ringing. Answer it. Hear nothing but crackling and breathing for ages. Speak to manager. Basement phone had been disconnected 6 months earlier.

My sister was driving along the M66 in Lancashire, late at night. She looked in the rear-view mirror and saw herself, sitting in the back seat, in different clothes, staring back. Looked away, looked back, still there. Was there for about 30 seconds.

(You know this one) Was brushing my teeth at the sink in my distant cousin's ancient isolated farmhouse in France. Happened to glance sideways and saw a pair of feet, in shoes and socks, and with the bottom couple of inches of a pair of trousers, standing next to me.
