‘What’s the dumbest reason you’ve been disciplined at work?’ – 21 people who definitely did not deserve to be written up

‘Not me but a colleague. HGV repair shop, varied group of older generation customers from mainly ‘laddish’ environments. Mostly they talk bollocks and depending on the customer, so do we. New guy took a phone call. Took a booking and finished it with ‘No worries, we’ll see you then, mate!’
Thought nothing of it until the customer complained to the upper echelons and the he got a disciplinary. Apparently he spoke too ‘casually’ for their liking and customer took offence. Basically threatened to pull out of a contract unless the lad was disciplined.’

‘I got a warning when I worked in the stockroom of a shoe shop in the Metro Centre, had just finished a 10 hour shift on a mental busy day and was in a class mood, burst through the door onto the shop floor singing the first bit from There Must Be An Angel by The Eurythmics. The manager (who never liked me anyway) gave me an official warning because I made her lose count of the cash she was counting. I quit not too much longer after that.’

‘I was working for a temp agency back then and was working on a bar in a shitty horse racecourse. Every customer was gone to see the races, everything was clean and sorted out, so we thought we can sit down on empty crates for a few mins. Some old bag complained to the manager that we are being unprofessional. She wasn’t even going to order anything! She just showed up, complained and walked off!’

‘I work for Royal Mail. The office manager always started briefings the same way: ‘I don’t want to sack anyone but…’, and this morning was no different. So, we were warned we would face disciplinary action leading to dismissal if… any of us was caught with dog biscuits! Apparently, we were encouraging dogs to attack us for a Bonio.’

‘I called someone out a bit for saying something slightly racist, and said something along the lines of ‘you shouldn’t imply all Chinese people are the same’. It wasn’t a big deal, I was just saying be mindful of your language in an office setting.
Cut to me getting pulled into a meeting with my manager as someone had overheard me saying ‘all Chinese people are the same’ and reported it.’

‘Not formally disciplined but I was once told off by a manager for wearing flat shoes. When I told him I preferred flat shoes as I had a bad knee, he asked if I had a doctor’s note! He was wearing trainers. Unsurprisingly I jacked that job in as soon as I could. I was there as a temp and for some reason they thought I was a permanent employee. I lasted a fortnight.’

‘I got told off for my tone in an email. The person who read it, had a tone in their inner voice. There was no tone in the email or in my inner voice when I wrote it.’
