Somebody asked ‘feral youth of the 00s’ what they are up to these days and the answers were surprisingly heartwarming

‘Social worker, two kids, all very middle-aged over here.’

‘Ex teenage/early 20s football hooligan in the late 90s/early 2000s, fighting every weekend, doing drugs and getting arrested. Now I work in corporate finance ,’

‘I was smoking weed in the local town graveyard at 14, does that count as feral? Also getting drunk off White Lightning in the surrounding countryside fields.

I’m now a teacher and I think the teenagers nowadays are lacking socially. Do I think they should be out downing cold mulberry wine in November in a damp field? Nope. But the only ones I know getting out and doing stuff are usually the ones actually getting arrested.’

‘Mid 40s here. Was a trackie wearing hang about in mid 90s. But after failing all my exams in 5th year, and reconnecting/meeting new friends pulled my socks up and passed 6th year with flying colours. Now got a daughter and well respected within my industry.’

‘I was one of those ‘ferals’ usually seen with a bottle of White Lightening and a pack of Superkings. I’m a mechanical engineering consultant now.’

‘Yep we used to get together in the eves being 15/16 and hang out at the local shops or at the park usually with a couple of spliffs and some vodka. We’re all still friends now we’re 35. I’m a nurse, others in our friend group are in marketing, the arts, an interpreter, PhD student and HR manager. We turned out alright!’

‘I was one of the goth gang who’d just sit on some steps or chill at Liverpool Pier Head all day Saturday and Sunday. Took part in the occasional after school shenanigans hanging round the streets.

Now I’m a Nurse and struggling to pay the mortgage. Take my back to my ’emo’ days where I was happier than ever.’

‘Was a feral teen from the 00s. Never in, never revised once. Was in care. Told a teacher to fuck off at 13, threw some chairs. Luckily didn’t get expelled. Was neglected by family etc.

Effectively moved across the UK and sofa surfed at 20 before I got a job. Had no plan or money. Not big on the drugs or booze luckily, got reasonable middling grades at school (some how). Now, three degrees, married and have a house and a cat who I work for effectively.

Don’t give up.’
