‘It is in the law of the parents – you must continue to buy your child a chocolate advent calendar until the end of time eternal! And when they get to a suitable age they should buy you one…. Same rules apply for Easter eggs.’

‘They make ones with alcohol and all sorts of grownup things (not all of which would be suitable for a parent/child gifting), so I wouldn’t say you can age out of them.

‘If she expects one from you, can’t you expect one from her? I got my (38yr) husband a hot chocolate one this year and he usually gets me a Lego one. To us, it’s just a silly way of counting down to some much needed days off work!’

‘I was sad when my mum stopped making my advent calendar when I was about 25 years old. It was a special one she filled with different sweets each day and I loved it so much. Moved out years before but she still did the calendar, then just one year decided to stop.

‘Same with my Christmas stocking, it was always my favourite part of Christmas and she stopped doing that a few years later. I didn’t tell her how much I missed it.’
