‘Was involved in a crowd panic at Bluewater once. An A-frame sign got knocked or pushed over (likely pushed). It made a disproportionately loud bang as it hit the floor. Someone shouted ‘run’ for a laugh (probably same bunch of lads who pushed it over).

Crowd chain reaction ensued along at least one entire side of the triangular Bluewater. People legging it in the same direction as the people now running towards them without knowing why, which is reasonable. We were in Wagamamas at the time. Credit to them, the staff didn’t fuck about at all – immediately directed straight out through the back of the restaurant via kitchens and staff routes until outside via fire exits. Clearly something they had rehearsed.

While it turned out to be nothing in the end, people really got shook up by it, some families got separated, not knowing if a missing kid was with the other parent etc. All while still assuming some attack was going on.

Some things I took from it. Know your exits where possible, do NOT let go of your kids’ hands, and visibility of the entrance.’

‘Started carrying a flask of spiced rum in case I come across a cafe and want a hot chocolate when I’m out on a winter walk. Everyone’s happy when I pull that one out.’

‘I bought a bunch of gold coins about three years ago, partially as an investment but, also, to buy the last spots on the ferry to Ireland if the shit hits the fan. Debatable whether gold would be considered valuable in the apocalypse.’

‘A few things but we live rural so the list could be huge but I’ll say:

‘Go bags’: Small amount of cash, weather proof clothing, snacks, water, torch (dynamo not battery), emergency details (yep everyone has EVERYONE’S emergency details), first aid kit, foil blanket, camping cutlery and prescription meds.

Checked and restocked as needed.’

‘Make sure the laundry is always done just in case there’s a power cut. No clean clothes for a week would suck.’

‘I keep extra tins in and extra pasta bags. That being said I have been using them up a lot more with the financial squeeze we are facing!’

‘I once bought about £15 of snacks and food (mostly Haribo/other sweet stuff) to keep in my car, just in case I got stuck on the M1 in the snow that was forecast. It never snowed. But I ate it all within a few days.’
