‘Switches on our plug sockets. No other countries I’ve been to seem to have these and my friends find it odd. Also our safety catches on the windows, and the fact you have to lift the door handles up to lock them – which is a child safety thing, hence why it’s a little tougher to do (so a small child wouldn’t be able to do it).’

‘A good friend of mine is Australian, we met when she moved to Scotland for a few years. When she was moving back home we planned my trip to Australia, when I was there I was incredibly confused with the toilets, a lot of the homes we visited (her own, her family and friends) had a separate room with just the toilet and then you had to leave that room and walk to another room to use the sink to wash your hands.

‘I was baffled and she told me it was weird for her when she lived in the UK that her flat only had one bathroom and everything was in one room.’

‘My American friends are floored at how fake of a 24-hour city London is. Specifically pubs closing shockingly early by ubiquitous bar standards elsewhere.’

‘My ex who was from Spain didn’t understand how strangers in the UK call each other ‘love’ or ‘sweetheart’. She got freaked out when the bus driver called her sweetheart. ‘Why did the driver call me sweetheart, he doesn’t know me?”

‘My cousins in Jamaica couldn’t fathom the thought of terraced-style houses. They’re used to having their own space and the neighbours further away.’

‘I had to explain crumble to Americans once. Made them one and they loved it. America why don’t you make crumble?’

‘Options at global food chains for example a baked/jacket potato is not available at US Subway. Dips at McDonald’s are different. Burger King vegetarian burger in the US is disgusting but delicious here in the UK.’

‘Commuting time. In the US my school was a 45 minute drive away and this was totally normal. Here people freak out if a trip takes more than 10 minutes.’
