A Reform-supporting driver suggested he got a bus lane fine because of his political views, and the internet had news for him – 18 penalty notices

We’re not sure what derangement syndrome fuelled this story from the Liverpool Echo, but we hope there’s a cure.

The paper reported the concerns of pensioner Paul Lawrence, who was handed a fine after driving in a clearly signposted bus lane just outside of Liverpool city centre.

The 76-year-old was on a mission of mercy, driving an elderly friend to the hospital, when he ignored the signs because he thought the bus lanes were no longer in use after a 2014 rule change. This particular lane was introduced in 2025 and has relatively new signage and clearly fresh road markings, so – er – good luck trying that defence in court.

He’s not the only person to fall foul of the recent addition.

But it was his suspicion that his car’s Reform UK sticker had got him the fine, rather than – you know – driving in a bus lane, that had the internet shaking its head.
