Tracey Thorn was furious with this album review but some people just didn’t get why
Here’s singer songwriter Tracey Thorn – you might know her as one half of Everything But The Girl – who wasn’t entirely happy with a review of her new album.
Nothing to do with what they said about the music, though.
A 55 year old wife and mother. God the more I think about it the crosser I'm getting. 55 year old husband and father. I'm trying to imagine it as a description in an album review. Nope. Can't do it.

We can imagine why that would be so frustrating. And yet some people, they just didn’t get it.
This person for instance.
Growing older is mandatory, growing up is a option . Age is only a number. Be proud of everything you’ve achieved
— Grumpy (@Sand519) April 13, 2018
I’m not remotely bothered about my age. Being described primarily as someone’s wife however is a bit of a fucker
— Tracey Thorn (@tracey_thorn) April 13, 2018
And this.
56 year old fan. Getting older can be liberating as u can be yourself n not give a damn
— cacoa elora (@JohnCowings) April 13, 2018
Aw jesus, come on, this is NOT about my age.
— Tracey Thorn (@tracey_thorn) April 13, 2018
And this.
I think we should feel fucking proud of being mothers- and of our ability to have good relationships. I’m more proud of those things than a lot of my work. It’s an arse comment- but it’s an arse patriarchal set up that doesn’t bow down to Mother’s and say all hail the queen!
— Kate Hardie (@KateHardie2) April 13, 2018
Well Kate you know I am, but I still don’t want to be described as wife and mother in the headline of an album review. Utterly patronising.
— Tracey Thorn (@tracey_thorn) April 13, 2018
Can you see a pattern developing?
Dont focus on the age thing be thankful you are above ground age is a number
— conor murray (@baldminty) April 13, 2018
Mate, this is NOT about my age. It’s about being described primarily as someone’s wife, in the context of reviewing my work.
— Tracey Thorn (@tracey_thorn) April 13, 2018
Everything but the point.
how often do men’s ages get mentioned in reviews/ interviews etc? same old shit indeed. Thank god you are singing it out for us all!
— occasional_animal (@occasionl_animl) April 13, 2018
This is NOT about my age.
— Tracey Thorn (@tracey_thorn) April 13, 2018
Fortunately for people who didn’t quite get it, she wasn’t finished there.
"What year is it? Same, same old shit".
— Tracey Thorn (@tracey_thorn) April 13, 2018
It's a shame I've already written next week's column, which is about the frustrations of being written about by men. It would be angrier if I wrote it right now.
— Tracey Thorn (@tracey_thorn) April 13, 2018
Thanks everyone. I'm not going mad then. Support much appreciated. Love to you all ❤️
— Tracey Thorn (@tracey_thorn) April 13, 2018
OK. I'm just going to spell this out once. My complaint was NOT about my age being mentioned. Very happy to be described as a 55 year old musician and writer in any review of my work. Get it now?
