Larkhall, in South Lanarkshire, is well known locally for The Black Lady, a ghostly apparition rumoured to be the murdered wife of one Captain MacNeil the owner of Boomhill House. So potent is her legend that in the 1960s that the Tonight programme attempted a televised exorcism. The cameras froze over in fine weather and the director was later found dead after a car crash. He had been impaled by a fencepost.

“Any of those ISIS bastards come round here and it won’t just be the locals they have to deal with,” said one resident. “They’ll have the Black Lady herself to deal with – and it’s no good trying to chop her head off. She hasn’t got one.”
