Superb letter in the FT in which an Italian reader uses Boris Johnson to understand the difference between cake and pie

The FT publishes the best letters and has the best comments. It’s just better than most of the media, this one spotted by @Tonytassell over on Twitter who notes, “FT letter writer on Brexit and the difference between cake and pie”

And a transcript incase you’re struggling on mobile

How I learnt the difference between cake and pie
From Prof Sandro Macchietto, London, UK

Sir, As an Italian living in the UK, I had some initial difficulty in mastering the difference between “cake” and “pie”, as they are both covered by the single Italian word “torta”. Thanks to Boris Johnson, and Brexiters in general, this is now absolutely clear: “cake” as in “have your cake and eat it”, “pie” as in “pie in the sky” (for now) and “eating humble pie” (as no doubt will follow).
