Someone counted who gets all the lines in Netflix’s ‘no mans land’ western, Godless
‘Welcome to no mans land’ says the trailer for Netflix’s new ‘female western’, Godless, set in a town mysteriously made up entirely of women.
That’s not the only mystery about the new show after @innesmck on Twitter kept a note during the pilot episode of the number of lines men had against the number of lines women had.
And this was the result.

Those workings in full.

For a town made up entirely of women, the men do a helluva lot of talking.
I used the subtitles to determine what constitutes a new line.
I’ve included the [speaks in Paiute] as best I could as women’s lines. I did not include the [Grunts] or [Sighs] though believe me, this would only have dramatically increased the count for men.

It also seems relevant to note that, as a plot point, the leading male character spends half the episode unable to speak.
And yet.

Some people suggested the trailer didn’t suggest anything else, and that perceptions of it being a ‘female western’ was purely down the viewer.

Watched 2 episodes based upon good story “A ruthless outlaw terrorizes the West in search of a former member of his gang, who’s found a new life in a quiet town populated by women.” Story is exactly as described.
PS. Voted HRC & think women should run the world. pic.twitter.com/wRWcw0S1gv

Did you see the trailer? I think it’s pretty clear from that why people expected better.

to be fair, 27 of the top 38 billed actors appearing in 4+ episodes (71%) are men. So it makes sense that 71% of the cast would have 73% of the dialogue…

It makes absolutely no sense that 71% of the cast are men.

Interested to know what you think (and … is it any good?)
