This 7-year-old’s maths question had her mum stumped. Can you do better?

Math’s question of the day, as posted on Facebook by a mother of a 7-year-old who had no more of a clue than her daughter.

What do you reckon?

Here it is again, just in case.

‘There are 49 dogs signed up to compete in the dog show. There are 36 more small dogs than large dogs signed up to compete. How many small dogs are signed up to compete?’

Got it?

Most people think the answer is 13. Except, according to Angie, this is how you do it (and it’s not 13).

“The district worded it wrong.

The answer would be 42.5, though, if done at an age-appropriate grade.

Apparently the way to get to 42.5 is as follows – 49 – 36 = 13. 13 / 2 = 6.5. 36 + 6.5 = 42.5.”

Let’s hope it was the front half of the dog.
