Brian Cox shared this photo of Piccadilly Circus in 1949 and Eric Idle had the perfect response
Not exactly breaking news but someone shared this picture of London’s Piccadilly Circus from 1949 and it went viral all over again.

You could spend an age spotting different things in it and here’s what people had to say about it.
1.
Complete with clearly visible News Theatre sign. Oh joy! Look at Life, Pathe News, Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry.. ‘That’s All Folks!’ On a one-hour loop.
There was another at Victoria Station, & at Waterloo I think.
But – at the London Pavilion, “Continuous Performance”.. of what?— HughSykes (@HughSykes) July 30, 2018

You can tell it’s before pressure washers were invented, like Paris in Funny Face – every building has years of dirt from coal fires etc.

Yep, London didn’t ban coal fires until the mid-1950s, after the Great Smog of 1952 which killed thousands (eventually). The cleaning of monuments and other buildings started in earnest in the early 80s, when I was going to college in London. Different city now.

I find it remarkable that I was born only 19 years after this photo was taken. https://t.co/0Wg9AUqFu9

I feel the same about WW2. When I was a child and studying it in school, it felt like ancient history. Another life completely. Now, over 40yrs old, I realise it ended just 30 years before my birth. That’s no time at all. Very strange feeling to realise that. Just 30 years.

You were lucky. I was already six and down the mine.

7.
I’m amazed I was born 5 years before this! Feel ancient

I cross Shaftesbury Ave every day just there. Wish it still looked like that. Thanks for posting.

Irationaly I find it hard to conceive there was colour prior to my existence, amazing how black and white films conditioned people🙂
