An alt-right guy said this about Idris Elba as James Bond – 17 killer responses
There’s been lots of speculation that Idris Elba will be the next James Bond and people are really excited about the prospect.
Well, most people are. Not this guy though, Richard Spencer, the co-editor of AltRight.com and president of something called the National Policy Institute.
Let there be no mistake, a Black James Bond would be an act of dispossession far greater than a flotilla of a million refugees. Refugees are, after all, refugees. James Bond is a symbol of British identity—indeed, the British empire—and of European masculinity writ large.

I kind of didn't care but now I really want them to cast Idris Elba as Bond just for the hysterical Richard Spencer tweets it will lead to pic.twitter.com/DclhecJm4i

Two thirds of the Bond movies are bad, one fourth of them are ok, and there’s just a handful that are actually good. If white identity is depending on this movie series then things are looking really bad for white people.

Spencer displays no understanding of Bond.
Bond is a Scottish orphan. He did not goe to a good public school. He does not belong to important London clubs.
He reports to English men and women who are members of a class far above him. They use him as a disposable instrument.

Spencer’s reaction to the prospect of a black James Bond shares the same motivation as the negative reactions to the casting of John Boyega as a stormtrooper or Amandla Stenberg as Rue—they cannot stand the existence of people of color in fiction anymore than they can in reality.

If you wanted a symbol of the actually-existing British Empire, the child of a Sierra Leonean and a Ghanaian would be a good place to start, but I assume he’s referring to an alternate British Empire which didn’t include anybody who wasn’t white.

I think Idris Elba as James Bond would be terrific. He’s suave, debonair, cool, handsome, articulate, intelligent… I can see why you couldn’t possibly identify with him.

It’s weird that he’s forgotten about the time Bond was played by an Australian.
