This D-Day veteran’s opinion of the EU isn’t what the Brexiters would have us believe

The 6th of June is the anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944, or D-Day, which began the process of liberating France from German occupation and led to an end to WWII. On this 75th anniversary, the annual commemorations have been attended by heads of State and dignitaries from all of the countries involved, including Germany – now a close partner to France and the UK.

One veteran of the operation, Eric Chardin, was asked about the progress made in protecting peace in Europe.

“Brexit worries me. It would be an awful shame if what we’ve gone to so much trouble to do, to collect the European big nations together, to break it all up now would be a crying shame.”

It’s a very different attitude to this one, from Brexiter Mark Francois.

Writer James Felton made this broader comparison.
