The Canadian rapper’s 2015 hit gave birth to a thousand parodies during that year, but the meme comparing two things by using poses from the video has outlasted them all, as you can see from the Sonic crossover.

As shorthand for calling out hypocrisy, the Marvel gif. that cropped up in the second half of the decade speaks volumes.

These started pre-2010s with nice simple things like cutting into cakes to reveal a coloured filling, but now involve explosions and other life-endangering stunts. It’s time to chill, people.

When an alt-right forum shared a now-deleted photo of a Muslim woman sitting next to a drag queen with that caption in 2017, it became a by-word for mocking the prudishness of the people who call everyone else snowflakes.
19. Confused maths lady
A South American TV series provided the face of confusion sometime prior to 2016, when – possibly due to widespread political chaos – it went viral. It’ll never get old.
20. American Chopper row
A row between father and son American Chopper team became the screenshot meme of 2018, applying to anything that could be argued about, from whether Die Hard is a Christmas to accusations against the now-impeached president.
21. The Tide Pod Challenge
What started as a joke about teens eating Tide Pod laundry sachets because they look tasty ended with teens eating Tide Pods because they were daring each other to do it. Good clean fun.
22. Blinking white guy

Bonus: That dress
The 2015 photo of a black and blue dress caused internet mayhem because some people thought it was white and gold. It gave rise to a rash of response gags where someone would insist something was “white and gold” as a way of signalling an internet split.
