19 pieces of bad yet widely accepted advice

As a rule of thumb, if someone gives you unsolicited advice, it’s because they aren’t using it themselves, which calls into question the quality of said advice.

Over on r/AskReddit, u/anasear posed this question to Redditors.

“What’s some widely accepted bad advice?”

Surprisingly, “Watch Mrs Brown’s Boys – it’s great!” didn’t crop up, but we thought these were worth a look.

1.

“Never, never, never quit.”

There is wisdom in knowing when to stop digging the hole you’re in.

2.

“Never go to bed angry”. I hear people say it all the time, and people accept it as if it’s gospel, but often a good nights sleep and a chance to let your cortisol drop so you can get out of your ‘reptilian brain’ and return to reason is really what you need.

3.

Fake it ’til you make it.

Having a bunch of narcissistic jerks acting like they know what they are doing and screwing things up is not improving anyone’s life, including their own.

4.

C’mon now, give Grandad a hug or he’ll think you don’t love him anymore.

5.

Turn the other cheek.

Nope, no one should accept being treated poorly or abused. Turning the other cheek is also known as enabling.

6.

Time heals all.

7.

“Oh, you’re being bullied? Just ignore them.”
Bbrainstormer

8.

“Do what makes you happy.” What if you’re a serial killer? Or a liar? Or a thief? What if those things make you happy? Terrible, terrible advice.
Dandelion-Fire

9.

No pain, no gain.

So many people get lifelong injuries from doing exercise wrong or pushing past their limits.

10.

“Wait 24 hours to report a missing person because the cops can’t do anything until then.” I blame police procedurals and movies for this one.
