Brits and Americans are arguing over who has the sillier country and it’s fabulous
Boris Johnson’s finally resigned as prime minister but it remains to be seen exactly how long he’ll remain in office.
His farcical longest farewell in political history threw into spotlight the arcane workings of the British political system, and the joys – or otherwise – of an unwritten constitution.
It also prompted a rather fabulous exchange between this Brit and an American over who has the sillier country.
It started when the Times deputy diary editor and history correspondent Jack Blackburn said this.
This would activate the Queen.
Lascelles Principles will direct her to decline his request for a dissolution. She then is left with the choice to dismiss him or not. https://t.co/REssnGdKcQ

To which @Pliny_theElder replied.

Prompting this rebuttal from @ChoiceWandys.
i mean your country is told what laws are by an unelected council of wizards that try to guess what the ghost of thomas jefferson really meant

A++.
And here are some of the many responses it prompted.

Excellent points made by all.

Lest we Americans find UK needing to “activate the Queen” amusing … https://t.co/IWw8UI7khT

As a Canadian, when an American and a Brit are insulting each other, I face a moral dilemma:
Should I order the large popcorn and medium soda? Or go for the bucket of popcorn with the bladder-blaster of soda?

Do British people not have unelected law wizards? This guy is definitely some kind of spellcaster. pic.twitter.com/CziS9qrHB3

At least when you activate the queen she still abides by the collective UK constitution. The same apparently cannot be said of the US Council of Wizards.

It’s takes a particular kind of confidence to look at the current British government, particularly today, and think we have any leg to stand on there.

I have to give that point to the British person. Unelected council of wizards is pretty spot-on these days.

And it didn’t end there …
Folks please the US and UK are BOTH extremely silly countries no need to argue
— Engels in the Outfield (@nostaticatalll) July 6, 2022
we have a frickin mace that has to be carried to parliament every day, and one of the acts of rebellion is to run off with it. we _are_ a sillier country lol https://t.co/HrUfHtzx1j
— For Me, the Action Is the Juice (@cornetto_fan) July 6, 2022
Well, uh….a bunch of violent ignoramuses stormed our parliament and maced a bunch of cops…so that’s kinda the same?
— Lindsay Gowin (@lwgowin) July 6, 2022
True, but more thats more scary than silly
— For Me, the Action Is the Juice (@cornetto_fan) July 6, 2022
Also silly: your head of state’s hat gets its own ride to Parliament.
I really wish our government would be silly rather than scary. We are definitely in scary land, and have been for a while.
— Lindsay Gowin (@lwgowin) July 6, 2022
I was going to add, that as an American living in the US right now, that mace thing sounds so adorable and downright quaint that I am quite envious.
— macpro75 (@macpro75) July 6, 2022
Trust me, we know that we’re screwed. I want a queen to dismiss the Supreme Court.
