Laurence Fox amplified Romesh Ranganathan’s good advice for men with his spectacularly petty response
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has launched a campaign to make men aware of the part they can play in making society less toxic – particularly for women and girls.
The ‘Say maaate to a mate’ campaign aims to remind men to challenge unacceptable behaviour in their peer groups.
Tackling violence against women and girls in the capital is one of my biggest priorities as mayor.
Last year, City Hall’s #HaveAWord campaign urged men and boys to challenge sexist behaviour and misogynistic attitudes. Now we’re giving them the word to say: #Maaate

If your friend’s language or behaviour was crossing a line, would you know how to step in?
My new campaign, Say #Maaate to a Mate, is a single word to stop misogynistic language in its tracks.

Romesh Ranganathan helped launch the campaign, then articulated the message after his comedy set.
Laurence Fox took time out of his busy schedule of not being the MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip to make this remark.
It went down about as well as you’d expect.
1.
I see the person they are coming for now is @RomeshRanga.
Romesh is a good pal, an incredibly decent man and a phenomenal comic.
Using a heavily edited clip as part of your wee culture war is pathetic.

Laurence Fox is just jealous because the stand-up comedian Romesh Ranganathan gets more acting work than he does. https://t.co/786d2t4EVD

He had more than 714 people in the room and @RomeshRanga has never lost a deposit https://t.co/LvVD0KF7bh

Guys – @LozzaFox is right. Only a “comedian” – not comedian – would have this many tour dates, including arenas, selling them out left, right, and centre.
And of course, no one white is going to watch him cos he’s a diversity hire. It’s the 18% of the non-whites going to see him https://t.co/1PQzSXITqs pic.twitter.com/a6vf6Elh1c

Maaaaate, he literally is. This though was not, this was a piece of advice at the end of the show in support of women.

A) Romesh is a funny comic
B) I'm sure he doesn't care what you think https://t.co/LUSSS5rVVy— Adam Benson (@Benson_TheDad) July 23, 2023

1/ For years women’s organisations working on VAWG have been begging men to speak out and play their part. It’s only by men talking to other men that misogyny and sexism will be addressed, after all we’ve been asking men to stop leering at us and grabbing our arses since forever https://t.co/4jnfsD82Sj

And you’re not married, not an actor , not a singer and not the the MP for Uxbridge

Or to put it another way …
“Maaaate” you are not an MP https://t.co/LvVD0KF7bh
