‘Get yourself 2 nice sets of shoes. I recommend a boot and a sneaker. Go shopping, feel them out, do reviews. Look for shoes that are comfortable, resistant to wear and tear, and that can be repaired. I’ve had the same set of casual boots for around 20 years and shoes for around the same time. Been resoled and repaired but given the average length of use of bad versions? Probably saved a few thousand over that time.
‘But the real trick?
‘Take all of the items you use in a given area and put them in a big box. Then put smaller boxes for used twice, 3x, 4, 5x.
‘Now use this system for a month. Any item you use more than 5x in a month is worth getting a nice version of.
‘Now do that for 3 months. Anything that remains in the first box? Put it somewhere in storage.
‘I did this in my kitchen and then took the advice of the buy it once community here… and my life exponentially improved. Better knives, got a really nice Dutch oven and a really nice everyday pan… they’ll last my lifetime and more, and I’ve never made better food.’

‘As a parent, a minivan. The space difference between a minivan and an suv is real. Any stroller fits. Groceries always fit, even if I’ve got the stroller in. Car seats have space, enough space for an adult to sit comfortably between them (long car rides are much easier).
‘Sliding doors means the kids aren’t banging into other cars. And great perks like folding into the 3rd row means I always have seating or storage space when needed. That row also turns toward the back, being a great seat to watch parades.’
