‘The family friendly public transport from Finland. Some of the buses had car seats for young children which made a 1.5 hour bus ride a breeze with a 10 month old. You also get free transport if you have a pram. I’d use my car a lot less of the UK transport was more family friendly. They also have the most amazing family carriage on the trains. Travelled all around Finland, being in a carriage with other families, you never felt like your child was bothering anyone. The carriage had toys and books for children to play with.’

‘Those bins that go underground so they can store much more. I’m constantly seeing overflowing bins with swarms of flies in the UK.’

‘In Ibiza I’m always amazed at public services in terms of bins, street cleaning, etc. By apartment blocks there’s huge bins, one for general waste, few each for different types of recycling. People even leave old furniture or stuff too big to fit in the bins next to them.
Early hours of the morning, teams of people seemingly appear from no-where – emptying all the bins, taking all the stuff left by the bins, street cleaners, pressure washing pavements, even guys touching up paintwork on curbs, pavements, walls, trees (the white painted bit at the bottom you see in the Med).
You think “wow, I wish we had this level of service in the UK!” then you remember the sheer cost of the place, and how even you, paying 4000 euros for a small apartment for a single month, are dirt poor in the grand scheme of things. Yeah, that’s where the money is coming from.’

‘Roller shutters on windows. These are common in Germany, they’re built into the walls so don’t make you look like you run a shop. When you close them, just before they fully close they have vents for air so you can have them closed mostly with the windows open for some air, they block the sunlight too which helps keep cool on hot days and they’re a massive security feature if you go on holiday etc.’
