Politics Angela Rayner Isabel Oakeshott
Isabel Oakeshott criticised Angela Rayner for ‘deliberately’ avoiding tax and people said it was the very definition of ‘a bit rich’
As deputy PM Angela Rayner finds herself in a bit of bother over her alleged underpayment of stamp duty, the criticism from the right is raging.
A certain Isabel Oakeshott, political journalist and commentator who also happens to be the partner of Richard Tice, the deputy leader of Reform UK, was particularly scathing.
Let’s have a look.
Angela Rayner did not “make an error”. She very deliberately set out to avoid stamp duty on what she now acknowledges is a second home. If her own govt was not so hell bent on taxing everyone else to smithereens she might get away with it.

Strong stuff. But hang on… isn’t this the same Isabel Oakeshott who recently moved to Dubai to avoid the VAT increase on private education? And where the level of income tax is … precisely zero?
Indeed. And people were quick to remind her.

And just in the interests of balance and all that, here is what she had to say in response to just one of the comments (but it’ll do for nearly all of them).
I’m literally not the DPM running a ruinously high tax government
