‘What’s a ‘progressive’ idea that’s actually regressive when applied? – 17 well-meaning behaviours that are surprisingly backwards

‘A lot of environmental review requirements do nothing to protect the environment and obstruct public projects and/or increase urban blight by leaving lots fallow that really need development. In principle environmental reviews are good but in places like Seattle reactionary moderates and NIMBY psychopaths have used them as a tool to prevent vital projects from happening and hamper the development of light rail.’

‘A common belief in queer spaces that sexuality is fluid and no one is 100% straight or 100% gay. Excluding the opposite sex from your dating pool is close-minded. I’m a lesbian and there’s no way I’ll ever be attracted to a man. I’m exclusively attracted to the female body.’

‘As a (fairly progressive) trans man, the first thing that comes to mind is: if you behave in a way that is counterstereotypical for your sex, you must be trans.’

‘People being opposed to the idea of constructing “luxury” apartments. There is this concept in housing economics called filtering that happens new apartments are constructed and tenants move to these new units and leave vacant their “old” units. Also, these “old” apartments cannot charge the same as the newer “luxury” units. Also, since housing supply increases there is more competition. The “old” units have to lower their prices. Austin’s real estate market is a real life example of this in play. So the more “luxury” apartments we build, the cheaper rents become. This also applies to housing in general.’

‘The whole thing of “Cultural Appropriation” makes no sense to me (and I’m centre-left progressive)
‘We learn about one another through appreciation of cultures across the planet; restricting something from a different culture from somebody solely because they aren’t from that culture halts that learning and appreciation imo (eg: people getting upset at tourists for renting and wearing a kimono/yukata in Japan.)
‘The only time one has the right to be angry is if someone is actively and intentionally using an aspect of another culture with the intent to mock them, or to be racist.’

‘You ever heard of horseshoe theory? Essentially when both sides go super radical they loop around to being the same thing. That’s how, when I was working as a tutor, I was told to not use big words around the black students because they didn’t have the education I did.
‘So uh… yeah. Don’t go too far off the deep end.’
