‘I’ve practiced a martial art (Kuk Sool Won) for most of my adult life.

People are pretty surprised when I mention that I’m a black belt, undergoing my testing for 2nd Dan and because it’s a ‘traditional’ martial art I learn weapons forms (sword, staff, short sticks and nunchucks) alongside self defence techniques.’

‘I photograph coins/money I see on the ground, started just over 10 years ago.’

‘I photograph old graveyards around the country at every opportunity I get. Then spend a stupid amount of time editing them. The plan in the new year is to try and sell the photos. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but if I can make some extra pennies doing something I love, then why not.’

‘For a while I did hot air balloon crewing, learnt a lot about rigging up the equipment, the safety steps involved, and then map reading for the retrieve. Often the balloon would land in some random farmers field, so there’s a need to find out who owns the land and request their permission to drive on and collect the balloon etc. I used to enjoy towing the trailer too.

Every so often if there was an empty space in the balloon I’d get a flight, so that was pretty cool as well. Sometimes we’d fly out of organized events, Bristol Balloon Fiesta was always good fun as there was so much to do, and you had behind the scenes access to the arena entertainment that the public didn’t.

Downside was the very early mornings, sometimes 3.30am/4am in the height of summer, but those crispy summer mornings were worth it every time.’
