‘What’s your funniest interview story?’ – 23 people who (almost) deserved the job just for being unintentionally hilarious

‘My daughter was being interviewed for her first Saturday job age 16 when a bee flew in the window. The manager ran out and my daughter calmly picked it up and put it out the window. She got the job.’

‘I had an interview earlier this year and there were several interviewers interviewing potential employees at the same time, along a long table.

‘Every time I answered a question, I could hear the woman next to me copying my answer 20 seconds later when she was asked it.’

‘Someone close to me had a Zoom interview during the pandemic which went terribly due to connection being lost etc. They finished the interview, slammed the laptop shut exclaiming “fuck, that was bad”.

‘To which they heard “erm we can still hear you. You need to close the window”. Didn’t get the job.’

‘Lad with a lovely thick head of hair shaved his head so they ‘couldn’t drug test him’. They took one off his leg.’

‘Bloke who took his shoe and sock off during the interview and started picking cheese out of his toenails. He didn’t get the job.’

‘I did an interview just last week over Zoom and the candidate sparked up a fag.

‘Sure, he was in his own house, but still…’

‘I once loaded up a video interview and the guy had no top on. It was too warm in his house to get dressed for an interview, apparently.

‘Narrow call, but we went with a different candidate.’

‘Went to support a friend at their request who was nervous about a job interview (multiple roles on offer). I really needed the loo while I waited so went in to use it.

‘Got talking to someone in the toilet who turned out to be one of the interviewers and who had decided I’d be a good candidate for the job off the back of a 5 minute convo. Asked me if I’d be interested in the role which I said I would be. Got me in for an interview then and there and I was offered one of the jobs and my friend wasn’t.’

‘Not me but I did hear a story of one candidate trying to say they were a “people person” and a “problem solver” but only managed to come out with “I’m a problem person.”‘

‘Probably the guy who spent the entire 30 minute video call openly vaping in whatever meeting room he was in at his current company.

‘I finished the interview genuinely baffled that the a) thought that was acceptable, b) how he got away with doing it and c) marvelling at the fact that he still genuinely thought he’d get the job.’

‘Spilled my tea over my laptop. I had to use the only piece of paper at hand to mop it up, which was the candidates CV. Right there in front of him. Still offered him the job, and he accepted!’
