‘What’s the nerdiest argument you’ve ever seen break out in a pub?’ – 19 brawls with petty origin stories

‘Steven Moffat, Mark Gattis, and Russell T Davis once lost a pub quiz about Doctor Who, so that must have stung.’

‘Changed the scoring matrix in a weekly pub quiz that meant the perennial winners were now at a *very slight* disadvantage.
‘Tried explaining that the pub puts this on to encourage people to drink on a Monday and teams weren’t returning due to getting chokeslammed (in a quizzing sense) every week.
‘Next week they returned with a (presumably accurate) mathematical analysis of why it was unfair, with another team member providing a (very well written) legal analysis underneath about how it was possibly illegal and/or discriminatory.
‘We stopped the quiz.’

‘Some guys around one of those touchscreen gaming booths which rewards money. Arguing loudly about whether a vampire bat was a bird or not.’

”Which is older, the pyramids of Giza or Stone Henge?’
‘We had an archaeologist in our team who objected to the question. From memory his argument (to the best of my recollection) was that Stone Henge was built in many different stages some of which predated the pyramids but others didn’t.’

‘Pub quiz question: “Who was the navigator of the Starship Enterprise?”
‘They said Sulu, when it was Chekov. Much arguing. I looked it up on the bar’s public computer (this was before smartphones) but was told my team would be disqualified if we used the Internet, even though it was between rounds. Still mad about it.’

‘Picture round in a quiz which had a partial image of what turned out to be a Jammie Dodger…except one team argued for an impossibly long time that it was in fact a knockoff made by one of the supermarkets (I forget which) so WASN’T a Jammie Dodger after all. Quiz master said it’s OK, both answers count but the nerdy team were having none of it.
‘I’ve never seen 5 people get so unhinged over a fucking biscuit…’

‘I got into an argument over a pub question which was something along the lines of “what’s the smallest thing we know of?” and gave the answer “atoms”. I’m a physicist, and was drunk, so it went on for a while.’

‘Argument about the question “what rodent was prized for its fur in the manufacture of stoles”.
‘The answer was of course Mink.
‘But the thing is, Mink are not rodents. They’re Mustelidae, so technically the answer couldn’t be Mink but also obviously was.’

‘I’ve seen a fist fight break out about the nature of Tom Bombadil.’
