Dexter is top Doggy name

TV and movie characters are influencing what we name our dogs, a study has revealed.

The top name for Brit dog owners is now Dexter, made famous by the affable Miami-based serial killer in the hit US TV show.

Elsa, the Princess from the blockbuster Disney movie Frozen is also popular with dog lovers, as is Mr Darcy the handsome hero from Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice.

The study commissioned by Crufts sponsor Samsung found traditional pet names such as ‘Rex’, ‘Snowy’ or ‘Spot’ are now deemed old fashioned.

Two thirds of those polled have given their dog a human name – with Max and Dave both making the top ten list.

Other movie inspired canine names included Bellatrix – the evil, female wizard from the Harry Potter movies, played by Helena Bonham-Carter.

Bizarrely, 24 per cent of owners admit that they have a social media profile for their dog, so family and friends can keep abreast of all its doggy news.

Andy Griffiths, President, Samsung Electronics UK and Ireland says: “Our national affection for our four legged friends goes back centuries and it is fascinating to see how the lifestyles of our pets are evolving in tandem with ours. It’s particularly interesting to see how we are sharing technology and involving our pets in this ever expanding element of modern life.”
