Google was worried its salad emoji excluded vegans so it did this
The good people of Google – they’re good, right? – were worried that its salad emoji wasn’t entirely inclusive. There’s an egg in there and vegans, well, you can see the problem.
So they did this.

Much better according to Google’s Jennifer Samuel who tweeted this.
There's big talk about inclusion and diversity at Google so if you need any evidence of Google is making this priority may I direct your attention to the 🥗 emoji— we've removed the egg in Android P beta 2, making this a more inclusive vegan salad. pic.twitter.com/kzHY0A9ZjG

Except, er, not everyone agreed.
1.
1960: “In 2018 we’ll have flying cars and travel across space!”
2018: “We removed an egg from an emoji because it hurt someones feelings.”

Why dont you make a salad for every preference instead of this hateful exclusion of everyone who isnt a vegan?
What about tomato allergies?
What about those who think bacon bits are paramount?
Also isn’t excluding eggs misogyny?
So not woke. 👎👎

Serious question: is this in earnest or intentionally ironic parody?

It’s so sad that we can’t tell anymore. 10 years ago it would have been an Onion headline.

Can y’all also pay more attention to YouTube pushing extremist propaganda & misinfo to billions? Also, I found myself involuntary logged in to location-related tracking by Google again. Years of trying to opt-out. And your security key help page still has errors. Nice emojis.

Speaking as a carnivore, I find this salad and specifically the exclusion of eggs (its most nutritious component!) deeply offensive and certainly not inclusive. Images like these foster unhealthy eating habits and disorders. Please bring back the egg. #bringbacktheegg cc @Cortes

And that’s not all, it turns out.
We’re slowly giving some our emojis more love. Our goat is no longer so angry. The turtle really needed a hug. And we gave the Grinning Face With One Large and One Small Eye some anti-anxiety meds. pic.twitter.com/HUKQe0EeAs

There was a PS.
Hello carnivores, vegans and everyone in between! Just want to clarify that the goal of salad emoji redesign was to create an image more faithful to unicode’s description. “A bowl of healthy salad, containing lettuce, tomato, and other salad items such as cucumber.” Bon appetite!
