This Times writer had the perfect response to someone who accused him of Bake Off bias

Congratulations to Great British Bake Off winner Rahul who won the Channel 4 show’s grand final last night.

Author and Times columnist Sathnam Sanghera is a big fan of the winner and said Rahul ‘charmed us with natural sweetness that never cloyed’. Here’s a bit of what he said.

‘When this series of The Great British Bake Off started, a friend remarked that I reminded him of Rahul and I took it as an insult. The first impression the research scientist made on me, and on Britain, was that he was a chaotic geek who didn’t understand the basics of British humour, culture, language or baking. But now I would take any comparison as a wild compliment.

With the rest of Britain, I have slowly but surely fallen in love with him. It started with the sweet way he told everyone that he began each morning with a glass of milk. Then there was the heartbreaking revelation that he took up baking to make new friends.’

Except this reader wasn’t buying it.

If that’s tricky to read …

‘The majority of Asians in the UK watch Zee TV and other Asian channels, so I wonder if Rahul was picked to increase that slice of viewers as he was not a clear winner, only ‘diversity’ was. It clearly worked for this Asian journalist: he likes all Asian cooks as his fawning over Nadiya testifies.’

To which the Times writer had the perfect response.

‘All the finalists were Asian, my friend.’

No coming back from that.
