This opening to Moonlighting’s fifth season breaks every rule in the TV detective show handbook

Back before he became John McClane, Bruce Willis was the wise-cracking private detective David Addison in Moonlighting – a mixed bag of comedy, drama and a will-they-or-won’t-they chemistry with Cybill Shepherd‘s Maddie Hayes character.

It was a show that marched to its own beat, and nowhere is it more obvious than in this season premiere.

The song, heavily leaning into Another Op’nin’, Another Show by Cole Porter from the Shakespearian Kiss me, Kate, was executed more like a quirky SNL opener than a detective show, but it somehow summed up everything you need to know about Moonlighting.
