This Question Time audience member had a clever riposte to Johnny Mercer’s social media gripe
The Minister of State for Veterans’ Affairs, Johnny Mercer, has been in hot water this week for claiming that military personnel who use food banks don’t really need them.
Johnny Mercer, "Food bank use by the armed forces is a personal choice."
Kay Burley, "They don't chose to use food banks, they say they don't have any alternative."
Johnny Mercer, "In my experience Kay, that's nor correct." pic.twitter.com/b5Gh0VRFW1

That wasn’t what earned him a cracking comeback from an audience member on Question Time, however. It was this comment about social media.
Johnny Mercer, "People on social media try to outdo each other on how outraged they are about something that never happened. That is collective bed wetting. There's a culture on social media to become more and more outraged. It's a bad side of social media." #BBCQT pic.twitter.com/KqDjga5cjv

This is probably Mercer’s most notorious social media comment.
Watch how one woman took him down.
Minister Johnny Mercer complains about people being outraged on social media – or as he puts it "collective bed-wetting".

“Given that the member of the Conservatives and the Conservative Party have shut down any form of meaningful protest, and he’s shouted across every member of this panel tonight, how else are we meant to get our point across other than social media?”
Her efforts were very much appreciated.
Well said that woman. And well deserved Johnny Mercer. What a spectacularly arrogant performance from him tonight; rude, dishonest and startlingly vain. On the back of such epic government failure, his off the scale smugness is deranged.

Johnny Mercer always comes across as someone who only wants to have a conversation with his own reflection. https://t.co/XPszOzL0lk

He’s not having a great week, is he…?
He’ll have to give his wife another raise…— Bloke on a bike 🟨🟥 (@Bloke_On_Bike) July 6, 2023
Quite a magnificent performance from Mercer tonight. He managed to be rude and overbearing to pretty much everyone. Very childish behaviour.
Suspect he’ll be after a new job come the next election. https://t.co/eiECSwG629

Look at his face as this sinks in he’s been called out for his bombastic rhetoric. https://t.co/PvEpI9NDPG

It could have been more embarrassing for him – just about.
I can’t believe Johnny Mercer is on Question Time, they’re discussing social media behaviour, and not one person has thought to threaten to insinuate his wife is a prostitute in the comments section of the Plymouth Herald website
