19 ways election campaign daredevil Ed Davey could have picked up his speeding ticket

While the two main parties were dealing with accusations and counter-accusations over the cost of Labour’s plans, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey was learning how to play We Will Rock You on an exercise ball in an old people’s home. Obviously.

However, he got a few more column inches (because column centimetres just doesn’t feel right) than he would have liked, because he also hit the headlines for picking up a speeding fine.

The offence, which happened in March, saw him doing 73 mph in a temporary 60 mph zone on the M1, after apparently not noticing the changed limit. He picked up three points and a total of £100 in fines.

This was his apology.

With his profile currently higher than ever, thanks to a series of highly physical photo-ops, it was almost inevitable that people would suggest the speeding had been part of that.
