‘My wife is from Brazil and this her big one too, it took her a long time to get comfortable with the idea that anyone could just walk up to your door and you can check your phone in the street or whatever, have earbuds in, just go a walk around the streets, etc.’

‘Since no one else has mentioned it yet 24/7 electricity. It isn’t even interrupted when it rains heavily. There are a lot of places in the world where there will be scheduled power cuts every day and something will definitely break or stop working during heavy rainfall.’

‘I’m from the UK so maybe this doesn’t count, but from friends who’ve moved abroad – the price of food. The price of a weekly shop from an average supermarket in the US and especially Canada is way, way higher. Obviously their average wages are higher as well, but coming from the UK it was quite a shock. They didn’t realise how good we have it in that regard.’

‘The police – when I lived abroad, you would have to carry a range of small bills as you were guaranteed to be stopped and ‘fined’. Corruption was universal. You are also not likely to get the crap beaten out of you for minor infractions or perceived differences.
In term of what UK police provide, the public in the UK have no idea how lucky they are.’

There will be no bribe to pay, no ‘petrol money ‘ (after an attempted home invasion in Cape Town that was the response) NHS , stable currency, no school fees (I’m looking at you again South Africa) a strong passport, no school shootings. Close to Europe, cheap plane fares.’
