16 and 17-year-olds are going to get the vote, and it’s annoying all the right people – 19 top responses
With Labour MPs now presumably wondering if they’ll be next on the suspension list, the party has slightly sidestepped the discourse on the MPs who have just lost the whip for dissent and changed the conversation to whether 16 and 17-year-olds should be allowed to vote.
This is why.
By the next General Election, 16 and 17 year olds will have the right to vote – ensuring young peoples' voices are heard.

Supporters of the policy, including those in the government, were keen to share the news.
Today we’re delivering on our promise to give 16 and 17 year olds the right to vote.
Young people already contribute to society by working, paying taxes and serving in the military. It's only right they can have a say on the issues that affect them. #VotesAt16

Delighted the voting age will be lowered to 16 by next GE – delivered by @UKLabour. ️
As former Minister for Young Citizens & Youth Engagement, I'm proud to have laid the groundwork.
We engaged young people, put #VotesAt16 on the political agenda & embedded civic education. ✨ pic.twitter.com/TMudr9ut5x

Of course, it left some people far from happy – and it wasn’t hard to predict which people that would include.
BREAKING: The UK is set to lower the voting age to 16 in landmark electoral reforms.

Despite – or, in some cases, because of – that, there has been a great deal of support for the move – to varying degrees of enthusiasm.

At 16 I was playing Sonic the Hedgehog. 16 year olds are legally defined in UK law as children. But hey, when the country (and in fact the entire world) is going to Hell in a handcart, giving children the vote is the least of our worries right now.

Is anyone seriously saying the average 16 and 17 year old is less capable of making a rational decision than these Brexit voters? pic.twitter.com/f18eAkS0ss

Absolutely right that 16 and 17 year olds should be allowed to vote in elections. They are part of our present as well as our future.

Ridiculous! These people aren’t even old enough to buy alcohol.
How can we persuade them to vote Reform when they’re sober https://t.co/DcseHOc6dQ— Florence Lox (@floboflo) July 17, 2025

On initial thoughts 16 and 17 yr olds should not be allowed to vote
They are too young and do not have the life experience necessary for these decisions
But then we remembered that adults voted for this current shit show of a Labour Party so perhaps they can’t do any worse

All the worst people don’t want 16-18 year olds to have the vote. That tells you all you need to know.

If 16 year olds can pay taxes then they should be able to chose who governs them.
End of.
