‘On my 10th birthday. We would make a cake on each of our birthdays in my family. On my 10th my brother and I were mixing the cake mixture in a bowl in our kitchen sink. My brother reached for something and accidentally knocked a full cup of washing powder into the cake mix.

‘Cue floods of tears and end of the world scenario. When I calmed down we made a new cake but I was mortified as we were no longer allowed to make a 4 egg cake and parents would now only spare 3.

‘A few years back, my flight home got cancelled, and as the next available one was only the day after, I was provided with a hotel room. The airline messed up the booking though, so I had to spend 4h on customer service calls to sort that out. ‘Not drastically horrifying, but as a chronically shy kid I’d say the time my parents hired a magician for my birthday party, and they made me stand up in front of everybody as their assistant. I’m sure most kids would love it, but not me. I think I had a bit of a meltdown partway through and one of my friends had to take over… I didn’t have another big party after that. 😅’

‘My 13th. Elderly neighbour took his own life in his garage; my sister then knocked me out cold demonstrating a James Bond move to my best friend. And later, it turned out that a present from my grandparents was in a post van blown up in Belfast. Oh how I laughed.’
