‘What’s the biggest waste of money you see people purchase all the time?’ – 21 people splashing their cash on nonsense

As you can’t help but be aware of you’ve popped into Tesco for a bottle of olive oil or a box of eggs lately: everything has become eye-wateringly expensive. Which might have you wondering why some people are still able to spend their cash on things you think are utterly frivolous.

Over on the AskUK subreddit, user PaddedValls posted the following…

In your opinion, what’s the biggest waste of money you see people purchase all the time?

Private reg for a car. I don’t get it. Now, everyone can spend their money however they please, but a private reg is just a bit, “look at me”.

But I’ll bet there’s things mentioned in this post that I’ve bought.

And lots of people chipped in with the spendings that make them perplexed, like these…

‘Delivery apps from place that do deliveries themselves, all the extra charges it’s can be double! Just phone up the place directly.’

‘Buying bottled water is borderline criminal in my view. And for the record, it’s one thing to be thirsty when you’re out and about and grab a small bottle – I get that. I’m talking to the people I see buying 6x 5 litre bottles at the weekly shop. Waste of plastic, waste of cargo, waste of money.’

‘I used to work at Costa and some of the regulars spent SO MUCH money it was insane. We worked out one guy was averaging around £400 a month!! Was always curious how rich he was to be affording that.’

‘Three big red onions, for the same price as 1kg of normally sized red onions. Madness.’

‘Not sure if this really answers the question but I can’t relate to people that have massive mortgages and a small life. I read a thing once, “it’s okay to have a smaller mortgage so that you can have a bigger life”.

Similar for expensive cars. I like my cars but I have cars that I can easily afford and I also like my house (a lot) and sometimes do think a bit more space would be nice but I wouldn’t sacrifice my lifestyle for a box room and a conservatory.’

‘Online gambling and wider gambling in general. I can understand the buzz of throwing a few quid at a horse when you’re at the races but mindlessly gambling on a phone seems utterly pointless to me.’
