‘Free coffee and tea and on Mondays free fruit. I thought that was naff until I saw that many public sector departments don’t even provide tea, coffee or tea spoons or lunch utensils in their offices.’

‘I was given a turnover target for the quarter which, if I met it, gave me a single day off. I did exceed it, but in my meeting was told “Only just. But we said what we said so I suppose you should still get the day off.”’

‘I used to clean a church… I’m atheist. The perk was that they tried to force me and my kids to attend a picnic with members of the church, in my free time, without pay and then told me it was compulsory when I declined. I did not attend.
‘Other (non official) perks included judgement for being “just a cleaner”, them forgetting to add me to payroll for 2 years, working with another cleaner whose reasonable adjustment was that she couldn’t use cleaning supplies and the occasional probing question about my faith… I told them I was in the Jesus Army.’

‘A hotel that gave us “free accommodation” and a choice of cereal (served with a bucket full of milk pods) if we worked consecutive double shifts. The accommodation was a twin room/storage closet.
‘They did it because they were in a remote location and wanted young, cheap staff who didn’t take up car parking spaces. They bussed us in from local towns.’

‘Used to work for a motor trade, they made a big deal that if you buy a car from the company there will be discounts. I bought a car and the discount only applied to add-ons that you didn’t really need, not to take off the asking price.
‘I guess they didn’t lie but just seemed a bit misleading. This sums up my entire work experience at the company.’

‘I worked for a company for 15 years after graduating. I believed in the company mission and genuinely went above and beyond, because loyalty would be rewarded, yeah? For my 15th anniversary, I got two things – a metal pin badge of the company’s logo and two weeks later a notice of redundancy.
‘That was 14 years ago. I’ve kept that pin badge – if ever I’m tempted to feel stressed or work longer than my contracted hours, I just look at the badge and remember how far being conscientious got me.
‘Now I think about it, that mean, stingy little badge has probably saved me a great deal of effort and worry over the years.’
