People in their 40s have been offering up life hacks to folk a decade younger – 23 tips to take the edge off getting older

You wouldn’t think much could change between your 30s and 40s, it’s only ten years after all.

But, given that when you hit 40 your eyesight drops off and your joints begin seizing up, the ages feel aeons apart.

AskUK subreddit user toiletroad has been pondering this, and posted the following…

‘People in their 40s, what advice would you have for someone who is in their early 30s?

‘Inspired by that other post. I’m turning 30 next week and dealing with some weird stuff atm. Pearls of wisdom would be appreciated.’

And people who are ever so slightly further over the hill chipped in with their thoughts, like these…

1.

‘Look after your knees. And appreciate your parents if they’re still around.’

2.

‘Go to the gym. Even if it’s just to maintain or do cardio, or start lifting weights. Will stop/prevent many issues later!’

‘This is the best advice. In my mid 30s I’d have all sorts of aches and pains, a dodgy back, weird issue with my knees, etc. I just assumed that was what it’s like to get old.

‘Then in my 40s I started walking 12,000 steps every day, doing a manageable strength training programme, and watching what I eat. I’m in my 50s now and have none of those aches and pains anymore, and am fully of energy.’

‘The time passes anyway. If you think it’s “too late” to do a thing, the time will pass anyway. You don’t want to be wondering 10 years later what would have happened if you spent your time on xyz.’

5.

‘Sort your pension out.’

6.

‘Just put ANY money in, anything you can! £20, £50, £100, £500. Anything is better than NOTHING. The sooner, the better.

‘START NOW.’

‘I’m mid 30s, so not quite old enough to give you any advice. However, I’d say you need to make the most of your opportunities to make money, save money and buy a house and stuff.

‘Life was shit for me in early adulthood, homeless and unemployed, blah blah. Long story boring I managed to buy a house and stuff and the security of owning a home and having savings in the bank is unmatched.’

8.

‘If you’re unsure about the person you’re with, don’t mess about and leave.’

9.

‘Don’t waste your disposable income on takeaways and material shit. Resist the urge and stick £50 in savings each time instead.’

10.

‘You look great, stop worrying.’

11.

‘Look after teeth and bones. If you need to lose weight, it gets harder the older you are.’

‘If you’re a woman, learn about perimenopause so you can recognise it so you don’t think you’re losing your flipping mind.’
