People shared the supposedly classy ‘status symbol’ that is actually hideously naff – 21 things that mark someone out as having zero taste

Status symbols are objects or items that are intended to indicate the someone’s high social status and economic position.

But, in reality, they usually make the owner look as if they have about as much taste as Kat Slater on a spree in Pandora.

They’ve been discussing this phenomenon on the AskUK subreddit after uietdrawingroom posted this…

‘What’s a supposedly classy status symbol you secretly think is a bit naff?

‘Mine is a Range Rover. I know they’re lovely cars, but I’ve never understood how they became the symbol of having money.

Yep, it’s certainly easy to judge the driver those on sight. And lots of people chipped in with the things that they find ultra-tacky, like these…

1.

‘The Dubai holidays – why people choose to repeatedly go every year when there’s so much more places to explore in the world!’

2.

‘Louis Vuitton luggage.’

3.

‘Loud designed brands. Like t-shirts with a MASSIVE Versace or Gucci or Supreme logo. They scream “Moron with a bit of cash on the hip trying to show he’s richer than he is”.’

4.

‘Personalised number plates are very tacky in my eyes but they’re expensive.’

5.

‘Teslas for me. Could afford one, but don’t want that wankstain Musk to get a penny of my hard-earned cash.’

6.

‘Urgh remember the Burberry phase?’

7.

‘Balenciaga. Theres a funny little conspriacy theory that Balenciaga is a social experiment to prove that certain types of people will buy absolutely anything if it has a designer logo on it.

‘I mean, last year they were selling a heavy duty hi-vis coat, ( you know the kind of one a forklift driver would wear) for £2850. And people were actually buying it.’

8.

‘British shooting parties. Where mostly men all dressed the same in tweed with shot guns cocked.

‘Wandering around country estates, waiting for “beaters” to scare the dumbest bird ever (pheasants) into the air to shoot at. I live in an area where they do this. They look ridiculous. As well as being pointlessly cruel.’

9.

‘Entirely silver/monochrome home decor – something I describe as “footballer interior design”.’

10.

‘An Aga stove. They’re massive and you have to turn them off all summer or your house melts.

There are newer ones with digital timers, but they don’t have the same status.’

11.

‘Lots of jewellery is dreadful. I went to the Cartier exhibition the other year, and the amount of stuff in there you couldn’t pay me to wear!

‘It began to look like costume jewellery once it became 4-layered multicoloured necklaces that looked like mayoral chains. And most of the worst offenders were ones that used to belong to royals and aristocracy, who supposedly have the best taste.’

12.

‘Hot tub.’
