‘What’s the stingiest thing you’ve ever seen someone do?’ – 24 of the most tightfisted skinflints on the planet

‘Something similar happened to me – I’d been transferring him money for council tax and then after he’d moved out I got a bill for £1k, turns out he’d just took my money and never paid it!’

‘I stayed at my (now ex) boyfriends house one night and for dinner he shoved the cheapest Aldi chips and one tiny breaded fish fillet in the oven for dinner, and then worked out the price of it and told me to pay it back – I think it was £1 something he asked for.

‘I used to pretty much do his weekly shopping because he would rather not eat to save money, but would always go out drinking. Not really sure what I was thinking.’

‘Big dinner with friends, definitely more than 10 of us, we all split the bill equally, ended up leaving a lot of coins on the table (probably 15€) as a tip, one of the wealthiest in the group left the table last and took the money we left. I’m still disgusted by it…’

‘I knew someone who saw that the tips that had been left by the others covered the money for their meal so didn’t bother paying anything.’

‘BIL gave us a CD. For Xmas. He unsealed the package, and made a copy for himself before giving us the CD.’

‘Lad I used to house share with asked if i was going to buy more toilet rolls. I pointed out I bought the last ones so he should. Rather than going out and paying for them he phoned a friend and asked if he could get one from him.’

‘Was at the bar and offered my mate a drink. Brought a drink for us both. Drunk 95% of mine when he suddenly appeared with a fresh pint. When I comment asking where’s mine he said “Oh you were taking to long and nursing your pint so didn’t think you wanted one.”

‘He’s never lived it down.’

‘My friend’s soon-to-be husband had me and a few other friends over for a games night. Made a big thing about ordering pizza for everyone, despite the fact that we’d all said we had eaten and were all good. He ordered like five pizzas anyway.

‘I had one slice, upon HIS insistence. I felt bad because no one was eating it so I had one slice. Next day, my friend asked me to send him £3 because I had one slice. For a pizza he insisted on buying, and insisted on me eating.

‘For context, he’s extremely wealthy and talks about it constantly.’

‘Work in a pub and you’ll see it all the time. The one that gets my back up regularly are the people who are obviously on expenses that ask for a receipt that “just has the total”. They do this because an itemised bill has four pints on it as well as food and they can’t expense alcohol.

‘Now I’ve got no problem with you defrauding your company. But if you want my help then leave a tip, you cheap bastard. You’ve had a free meal and a bunch of drinks you weren’t entitled to.

‘The worst individual I saw watched all his friends post their share of the bill and leave tips before asking “How much is left to pay?”. They literally waited until their group was outside before trying to use the tips towards their dinner.

‘Unfortunately for them the guy who made the booking was a regular and I knew him well. I shouted him back in and asked if the overpayment was to treat the last guy. It most definitely was not. And it was a works event.’

‘We had a kitty in an envelope for someone in work after their partner died. Guy put a fiver in and took his change.’

‘Bloke I knew took his wife out for a romantic valentines meal at the local hospital canteen because it was cheap. They also joined the Jehovah’s Witnesses so they didn’t have to spend money at Christmas.’
